Lunch and Learn Series: Azure and the Cloud
By SOLTECH
If you’re looking for a cloud, don’t look up. Let Greg Main, Senior Software Engineer at SOLTECH, tell you why you should be looking at Microsoft Azure instead.
Since its launch in 2010, Microsoft’s cloud platform, Azure, has exploded in popularity and profit (estimated at around $2.5B, if you were wondering). With competition from the likes of Google and Amazon, Azure is killing it as a leader for IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
Let’s step back for a moment and define a cloud platform: cloud platforms, whether they’re infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and software-as-a-service (SaaS), allow users to access servers, store data, network and create software over the internet (read: the cloud). Doing all of this in the cloud is cheaper because you don’t need to buy hardware, and it’s way faster – among a few other things. Typically, a user is billed for how often the service is used – like your electricity or water bills.
Why Do We Love Azure?
For starters, they’re in 24 regions, across the globe.
Microsoft Cognitive Services are awesome, too. They include things like face recognition, talk-to-text, and speech translation.
Other Reasons We Love Azure:
Data Sovereignty: High-level encryption practices and governmental screening for all employees allows government entities to use the platform under strict data security laws.
Ease of Use: The Management portal provides security, auditing, and tagging features that help users manage resources like a storage account or a database, and the Powershell feature allows a user to preset scripts (cmdlets) to perform complex tasks.
If you’re looking for a cloud platform that’s easy to use, secure, and well-trusted, you’ll likely find exactly what you need with Azure. What more could you ask for?
At SOLTECH, we’re doing what we love, and we love to talk about it! If you have something to add to our lunch and learn, comment below. If you think you know something we should know, give us a shout. We’d love to have you host our next lunch & learn.
