      What is Android?

      Android is currently the world’s most popular mobile operating system and is made by Google.  It operates on a large number of phone and tablet devices, which is part of the reason why it is so popular.  When considering your mobile application strategy, Android is an operating system to target.

      The Android operating system is open and can be modified to meet a manufacturer or re-seller’s needs such as customizing the user interface or locking down the device to control how the device is used.

      Developing applications for an Android device can be done in many different ways.  One option is to use the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and create a native application.  Another option is to utilize mobile unifying technologies such as PhoneGap or Xamarin which can make building applications for multiple operating systems quicker and easier to maintain.
